What's the difference between opening a graphic and placing one? OPEN is the command that you would use from the FILE menu to open an existent file. Use OPEN when you need to open a file that is not included in the OPEN RECENT FILES menu. OPEN and PLACE also refer to the manipulation of raster graphics. OPEN allows you to import a raster graphic into Illustrator - this operation places the raster graphic in a new, letter-sized document with the image in the center. This makes the image place-embedded in the Illustrator document instead of externally linked. PLACE gives you more options in placing the image into the Illustrator document. To PLACE - you start with an open file and find the raster image you want to use. At that point - the PLACE dialog opens and you have the option to place-LINK the file, place the file directly on a TEMPLATE layer, or REPLACE another image that is already in the open document.
How do you get the guidelines to appear? How would you use them? First, you must have the rulers turned on. Mouse over the horizontal or vertical line that you wish to use as a guideline and drag it to the proper position. You may move them around by dragging them with the mouse. You can lock them into position (which is the default setting). You can control the guide style and color in the PREFERENCES menu. You can also choose angle options for them using the ROTATE tool. Guides are useful in lining up objects on a vertical or horizontal plane or creating objects of a particular size.
What do you use to "nudge" your object? To NUDGE select the anchor point or path segment that you want to move. You can then use your arrow keys to move 1 pixel at a time in that particular direction. If you SHIFT while using the arrow key, you will move 10 pixels at a time. You can change the nudge increments in the PREFERENCES - GENERAL menu. Holding SHIFT on the newly incremented keystroke will nudge 10 times the new increment.
How would you export your drawing as a raster graphic for use on the web? In the FILE menu - SAVE for Web and Devices. Choose the graphic format that you want to save the art as. Raster (bitmap) formats are .gif, .jpeg (.jpg), .png or .wbmp. If the file contains more than a couple of lines of text - choose the .gif format. If there is very little to no test choose the .jpg format.
Part II - Looking Around
Draw a rectangle - it may be filled or unfilled, but give it a stroke outline.
Once the rectangle has been created, leave it selected and visit each menu (File, Edit, etc) and see what options are available on those menus. Take a look at all the palettes that are available from the View and Windows menu options. Tell me:
Two options you find on the View menu. From the VIEW menu - you can control the view with ZOOM controls. You can also view GRID and GUIDES controls.
Three palettes you can open from the Window menu. Palettes include COLOR GUIDE, GRADIENT and SWATCHES.
